Australia is an island and a continent that lies off the Tropic of Capricorn line. The nearest country is Indonesia, from which Australia is separated by the Indian Ocean.
The island comprises the mainlands of West Australia, Northern Territory, South Territory, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Australian Capital Territory and Tasmania, that is eight regions!
West Australia is in the west, Northern Territory is in the mid-north, South Territory is in the mid-south, Queensland is in the north-east, New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory and Victoria are in the south-east. Tasmania, which is also an island, lies off the south-east coast of Australia. The capital city is Canberra, which is situated in south-east of Australia.
Australia has a total area of about 7,682,300 sq.km. About 54% of the land area is devoted to grassland, 14% to forest, 7% to arable and 25% to other land.
In 1996 the population of Australia was nearly 18.5 million. The density of population was approximately 2 people per sq.km.
