The current appearance of the flag was created with the establishment of the union between Great Britain and Ireland in 1801. It consists of the red cross of St. George (the patron saint of England) with white edges and the cross of Saint Patrick (patron saint of Ireland) integrated with the cross of Saint Andrew (patron saint of Scotland). Wales, whose patron saint is David does not have its symbol on the flag, as the establishment of the union between England and Scotland, Wales was part of the Kingdom of England. Correct aspect ratio flag to 1: 2, although the British Army uses a modified version of the proportions of 3: 5. An earlier version of the flag of the United Kingdom was established in 1606 with the announcement of James I Stuart King of Scotland and England. The new flag was approved by order of the Privy Council in 1801.
