Construction of the present Gothic church began in 1248 and lasted intermittently for over 600 years to 1880. Located on the site of a Roman temple of the fourth century and later Carolingian church from the time of the River Rhine Cologne Cathedral is 144 meters long and 86 meters wide and towers with a height of 157.38 m [1] After the towers (about 1870) cathedral was the tallest building in the world to 1884. It is the second highest gothic religious building in the world (after the Cathedral of Ulm) and the third largest cathedral in the world in terms of area (after the Cathedral of Santa Maria in Seville Cathedral Nativity of the Holy Virgin in Milan). The area with the towers of the church is 7000 square meters. In 1996, the cathedral has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Construction is a showcase of both Cologne and the whole of Germany, massively visited by pilgrims and tourists, and in 2001 was nearly 6 million people. In 2005, the cathedral was one of the highlights of the World Youth Day under the leadership of Pope Benedict XVI.
