Christmas in the United Kingdom People celebrate Christmas with their families. Most of them have a Christmas tree which they decorate with ornaments. People also decorate their houses with Christmas lights, holly, and mistletoe. Christians go to churches for services, and sing carols or watch Nativity plays. Santa Claus (also called Father Christmas) is believed to bring children presents. He leaves them in stockings which are hung up by the fireplace. As a little "thank you" children leave some treats for Santa Claus, and a glass of brandy/milk. Children find their presents on Christmas Day morning. The main celebration occurs on Christmas Day (December 25th). People have a special meal in the afternoon, and it includes turkey or sometimes goose, vegetables, and stuffing. For dessert, they have Christmas pudding, Christmas cake, or candies (for example, mince pies). People watch the TV broadcast where the Queen Elizabeth II gives a message. On December 26th, they celebrate Boxing Day. People usually watch horse races, or games. There are also big sales in stores.
